2012 Los Angeles Women's International Film Festival Call For Entries

About The Festival   Alliance of Women Filmmakers Alliance of Women Filmmakers created this festival seven years ago with a goal to increase opportunities for women filmmakers. Each year the festival has grown in size and reach.     We are proud to have showcased more than 800 films made by women of diverse back grounds from all over the world. We have also established a network of women filmmakers world wide who share the same passion in creating opportunities and powerful screen images of women.    Described by Back Stage West Magazine, a leading source for entertainment news, as a "Must-attend event for all women in the entertainment industry," the festival presents narratives, documentaries, animations and student short films. We also presents a variety of industry panels, workshops and seminars to help women filmmakers craft their skills and stay connected with other women filmmakers. Our 2011 distribution workshops were taught by Akua Boyenne, a Los Angeles-based entertainment attorney who specializes in motion picture and television transactions. Her clients include award-winning and aspiring writers, directors, actors, producers and production companies that work in both the studio and independent systems. Previous year's panels and workshops have been hosted by; The Women's Steering Committee of the Writers Guild, International Documentary Association and Women Make Movies New York.        The festival is now going into its eight year to continue its goal of providing a valuable avenue of exposure and networking for women filmmakers, to share their diverse stories and bring awareness to critical issues through visual media.

Get Real! Wise Women Speak features extraordinary women, including Jane Fonda, Nikki Giovanni, Della Reese, Marianne Williamson, Susan L. Taylor, Jody Williams and others, who are using their time and talent to benefit the world.  Nobel laureates, indigenous elders artists, grandmothers, scientists, activists, and educators speak about their journey to the wise woman years and the inner fire that propels them to make the most of their wisdom and experience.


The film creates a vivid mosaic, weaving together ancient archetypes, modern-day stories, vibrant interviews, impressionistic re-enactments, elegant graphics and an original score of Celtic and world-influenced music.

 Alliance of Women Filmmakers will open the Los Angeles Women's International Film Festival with documentary feature 'Pink Skies' All proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure Los Angeles County. Screening will be followed by a reception and Q/A with filmmakers.

About  Susan G. Komen for the Cure Los Angeles County

 Over 15 years, the Komen Los Angeles County Affiliate has raised $8.2 million to provide community-based grants to local organizations providing breast cancer screening, education, and treatment services and to help fund national breast cancer research programs. A major focus of Komen L.A County is to help uninsured and underinsured women and men who have symptoms of breast cancer and are facing barriers to accessing health care, particularly women and men under 40. Of all breast cancer foundations, Komen is the only organization where 75% of the net proceeds stay in the communities where they are raised. The remaining 25% of the net funds raised support Komen’s National Grant Program, which is regarded as the most innovative and responsive grant program in breast cancer research.

About Pink Skies

Pink Skies is an inspirational documentary about the empowering women and overcoming obstacles as human beings. The film covers an extraordinary event, "Jump for the Cause" which brought together 181 women from 31 countries to create a World Record All-Women's Skydiving Formation. The women also raised almost $1 million for breast cancer research! Along with phenomenal skydivers, the film features breast cancer survivors, cutting-edge researchers, doctors and healers.

Tribeca Film Institute - SLOAN FILMMAKER FUND
Tribeca Film Institute / Alfred P. Sloan Foundation

The Tribeca Film Institute is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that seeks to educate, entertain, and inspire filmmakers and film lovers alike through creating innovative programs that draw on the power of film to promote understanding, tolerance and global awareness. 

The TFI Sloan Filmmaker Fund, in collaboration with the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, will provide up to $140,000 in support of innovative and compelling filmmaking that explores scientific, mathematical, and technological themes and story lines, or a leading character who is a scientist, engineer, innovator or mathematician in fresh ways. TFI encourages feature-length narrative film projects that creatively question the role of science and technology in everyday lives, and depict the lives of scientists, engineers, innovators and mathematicians in new, but still accurate ways.

Past recipients include outstanding screenplays about Rosalind Franklin, Hedy Lamarr, Richard Feynman, Edwin Hubble, Ramanujan, Stanley Milgram, Muhammad Yunus and a boy who built a nuclear reactor in his backyard, as well as many comedies. The TFI Sloan Filmmaker Fund does not offer funding to short films or documentaries. 

Financial support is given with the goal of helping a film at any stage progress towards completion, and is available in three categories:

Development Funds

This category awards $10,000 to $40,000 towards project development, to help the filmmaker commission a screenplay based on a treatment idea, option literary material for adaptation, commission a rewrite of an earlier draft, retain a casting director to attach talent to help secure funding or similar areas that will bring the project closer to production.

Finishing Funds

This category awards $10,000 to $40,000 towards post-production, to help the filmmaker complete specific post-production processes on the film. These processes can include sound editing, negative cutting, transfer to film, printmaking costs, and other items necessary to the film's post-production deliverables. This award is meant for films that are close to completing post-production with the goal of completing them for distribution.

Distribution Funds

This category awards $10,000 to $30,000 towards self-distribution and promotion of a completed feature length film, with an emphasis on creative and innovative distribution models.
